Adding the missing internal camera to a Cingular v3xx by jpsmith76.

Let me start by saying I take no responsibility for what you may do to your own phone, and your experiences may be different than mine. Good luck and have fun with your new internal camera.

This guide is written with my experience on a Cingular branded Gun Metal Gray v3xx. If you have the gold or platinum version, you may be out of luck, as the hinge area is designed differently and doesn?t appear to have the proper holes for the camera.

Parts and tools required:

1. phone disassembly tools (really small torx [T4, T5, T6], small knife, gentle hands)
2. internal camera for installation. I bought the whole LCD screen assembly from www.gsm4world.us, but under further investigation, the camera looks identical to the one sold as a replacement internal camera for the K3. If I was to do it again, I?d probably order just the internal camera for the K3 and save $30.
3. SEEM Editing and General p2k05 File System knowledge.

Time to get started:

1. Turn off phone and remove battery.
2. Remove the 4 small rubber caps at each corner of your main internal LCD screen. Put them aside, but don?t lose them, you want to put them back in when finished.
3. Remove the 4 small torx screws and set them aside.
4. Slowly pry and carefully remove your faceplate area. Note that the external LCD screen cover stays place, but the rest of it comes off. BE CAREFUL, don?t break any plastic tabs or anything else that may be holding it down. A thumb nail is the safest route IMO as you can feel the amount of tension you are placing on the faceplate. Otherwise I would recommend a credit card so you do not scratch up the surface of the phone. Run your nail or card starting from the top (camera), down along one side staying between the side buttons and the faceplate, around the bottom (earpiece) then up the otherside as before.
5. Remove the three buttons from the now exposed top (volume, smart, and voice dial keys) and set them aside. One of mine fell out on the floor and it took me 15 minutes of searching to find it in the carpet, so I recommend just taking them out and putting them aside so you don?t lose any of them.
6. You can now see the external camera, and the back of the internal camera circuit board (which also has the red recording light in the side facing you)
6a. Unplug the external camera from the circuit board as well as the ribbon cable leading to the base of the phone.
6b. Here you have 2 options: Either bend back the internal camera board to go to step 7, or remove the entire lcd unit. I chose to remove the unit. This option also made it easier for installing the internal camera.
6c. With the lcd removed, you can remove the rubber surround and see the hole for the camera lens. With a small screwdriver, push into the hole to press out the hole cover but be gentle as we will use this piece later
7. Carefully remove the tan rubber surround from around the external camera, and also the area where your internal camera will sit.
8. My purchase from www.gsm4world.us included a new rubber surround which included the hole for the internal - Use your small knife to cut a hole in the side for the internal camera, just big enough so that the lens area fits through. (you want it to look like the internal camera)
9. Put the rubber surround back in.
10. Install your new external camera into the ?square socket.) (correct orientation is a must for the camera to work. You can see that one corner is marked with an extra copper dot on the connector side) Also, my unit had a white dot on the bottom left corner of the internal camera. If your does not, a simple pencil mark should work if you are moving from an international lcd to the cingy. If you are moving from one lcd to another, there are 4 small pins holding the camera in place. These need to be carefully pushed back towards the frame to release the camera. Care needs to also be given when inserting into the new lcd
10a.Place your lcd back into the phone being careful that the side buttons line up correctly
11. Push the camera into your newly cut hole.
12. Done on 6c as I did not want to scratch the visible portions of the phone Open up the phone and remove the solid black plastic piece covering the lens, and you should be able to see your camera through the little square hole. If you see any of your tan rubber, take everything back out and trim until you cannot see any tan rubber though the camera hole.
13. If you are confident you have the camera plugged in the correct direction (I don?t remember which way I finally ended up with, but you have a 25% chance of being right the first time) put your volume, smart, and voice dial keys back in. They only correctly fit one way.
14. Replace your faceplate and screws. Now remember that hole cover I told you to keep? I used a lcd cover from an older phone that was without scratches - Clean it off just to be sure. Now with that hole cover, place it on the best spot of the plastic lcd cover and that is your template for cutting a camera lens cover. Smooth and reclean after cutting and apply with your clear adhesive of choice (DO NOT get it on the camera - that would make this whole process moot)

Software changes:

1. You will need to enable the ?internal view? in SEEM 0032, as well as all the video calling functions. As of this guide?s writing most of these bits haven?t been discovered. I used the MAXX V6 SEEM 0032 as by base SEEM, and have modded from there, so they are already enabled.
2. Copy the mme_imager.cfg file from an International v3xx into the /a/mobile/video folder. (do not use the one from a v3x or MAXX v6, they don?t work, and the v3x will cause bad things to happen to your phone)
3. Restart.
4. Test to see if you can switch cameras in the options menu of taking a picture.
5. If it doesn?t work, try changing the camera position 90 degrees in its socket, and try again.

Make sure everything is assembled properly, including the little rubber stoppers over your torx screws.

Sit back and wait for AT&T to catch u and offer video calling!

0032 Seem Edits by StarkRaving:
Offset 5B bit 0: 1=on Enable Internal Camera & Video
Offset 5D bit 0: 1=on Enable Mirror on & off in camera and video setup

While I had my gunmetal torn apart, I decided to swap all the external pieces with my gold v3xx. Now I have a Gunmetal/Silver V3xx and most importantly, a Gold/Black V3xx with internal camera. Pics will be coming later

As USSS always says "Life by the Seem, Die by the Seem" - only difference here is that with this mod, you can really kill your phone :-)
