There are very safe "bio-friendly" options that we all can choose from. I commend then for their experiment.

They are crazy. Not for me. I went 21 days without out electric . That was terrible.

They mention that it is more difficult but are trying to stick with the 1 year experiment.

Although, they also mention that their family/quality time has improved and time has seemed to "slow down" from less distractions. Not all bad then.
