XP is the best Windows ever designed.
I think what XP users really wanted wasn't Vista but an XP system with added features and improvements to the s/w that would increase the speed and leave the compatibility untouched.
alot of PC manufacturers have reverted back to shipping their new models with XP as opposed to Vista. Who needs a memory hog that wont work with anything?

Vista is just an xp with new skins installed and a rip off a Mac, xp still over powers vista in many benchmarks running high end games. Vista is a xp with new bells and whistles and they $400 for that? whos in for that ? Definitely not me..

i think we just need to give vista some time, maybe where the service pack 2 comes out eventually. hey, at least it isnt as bad as windows ME.

Win ME was just as Vista an GUI improvement over 98...ahh I hated it, for the longest time I was running 98 until XP came out...

Somebody remembers the NT4.0/x versions that Microsoft updated various times, with service packs, oh i lost track of how many SP they had for that version, soon after Win2000 came out at that time Win ME was hanging like Vista is currently, they decided to merge the kernel and bring out XP :) !!!

I was partial to Xp when it came out and was more faithful to Win 2000 but nor XP it is...

I know I was just as scared for upgrade , and I am sure everyone remember the FAT32 and NTFS file system issues we had to deal with, thank God Microsoft didnt come up with something renovating this time, to give us the pill of clean install!

I bought a new laptop about 10 months ago. I kinda had to choose vista. It hasnt given me any problems as far as reliability.....although it does lag a bit in performance. I recently downloaded the sp1 beta, and yes it did help. Not as much as I had hoped though. I do favor XP in porformance, but VISTA is alot more secure. I guess they both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Vista lags in many issues compared to xp...In short here are some of the issues that I'm mentioning, since I'm running running dual OS's
First, Upon install vista installs and upgrades your pc based on a 5 point scale and major damage is done to your scale by your video card. Without Aero effect its just a skin over xp
Moving on, vista encloses the users in the "windows ecosystem" meaning, IE7, WM11, Windows Live, etc...RSS feeds will not show up in the gadget bar with firefox. Most of apps Live One care, Windows Defenders, so thing and so forth bundled and installed to waste HDD space.
Very poor directory allocation via metatags, meaning vista relies on metatags, which are keywords linked to files to make them searchable. With metatags, you can create virtual file folders based on a variety of search terms. For example you are creating a file based upon Motorola, all files related to Motorola will be grouped into a virtual folder without physically dragging that file to a new location. The downside is that older files (say you upgraded your system from Windows XP or imported data from an earlier version of Windows) will have to be retroactively metataged in order to be searched. I found this very disappointing since search function was use less if you upgrade, whats the point?
Vista in conclusion in performance wise, is stable, secure and robust but XP does the same job with less resources and cluttering too many applications that you dont need. Most of the usability and new features it offers I find is rarely amusing to a home user, its for enterprise-level customers. I think its not a bad OS overall, its just that the enthusiasts like us expected more like it was with XP over Win98.
Sorry if this was a long post just went ahead to share some MS with you guys!

O.K. so here it is.....I took my laptop to my parents to do a side by side comparison Vista on a dell inspiron vs. XP on a dell desktop. The results are as follows: Vista loaded web pages quite faster, but page rendering lagged a bit. Vista also has a much more compact feel and appearance. Both computers were running on a wireless netgear router through cable broadband. The speed was similar for navigating around. The only major difference was that the XP machine handled multiple tasks a little quicker. I have a 1.73ghz core duo W/2 gig ram. The desktop had a P4 3.2ghz W/1 gig ram.......Vista is really a RAM hog. In conclusion.....I am not sure what all the fuss is about.....they are both good operating systems. I was eager to try Vista.....although I really had no choice at the time. I am not dissapointed. Maybe some people went cheap on the RAM and CPU. Any OS would lag with less memory.

Nice info. there tommy. A real life test is always good.

Performance test is always done on identical computers. RAM, HD buffer, RAM size cache, CPU speed matter the most. Running web pages dont prove real speed of the PC, run, encoding or CPU intensive programs or benchmark them to see the actual score and compare. I run both XP and Vista on same machine and difference is dramatic. Graphics card is the main power house for rendering images on your screen. It has nothing to do with OS.

True, but taking this info. from hardware perspective is what needs to be don. As a comparison it will lack the required constants to make it valid.

I hope the Sp1 for vista is better than the last beta......I expected it to do alot more. Although I doubt it will be.
