Well, this is the only answer I can come up with. Here is the story...

Woke on Sat morning and as always, played a game of pool on the phone with my coffee (a wake-up to get my brain going ;-). That afternoon was taking some pics and vid as it started raining. Covered the phone as best as possible to get the last couple pics and dashed to the car. Wiped what little water was on it off (also have a clear plastic cover on it) and went on about my day.

That evening went to use gmail java app and it said "cannot start app. Phone connected to computer". Shut down and keypad flashed and charging light was faintly blinking - first indication of a short. Took it apart but no visible signs of issues. Restarted and plugged into computer and connected fine but I thought I should do a backup on my phonebook just in case - error reading phonebook :-(. After unplug though, java apps worked - for a short time then message came back.

Did a web search and someone with a V3 had a similar issue and a responder said to do a reflash... ya, that's great but I needed my updated phone book ;-). Yay, bluetooth - everything up to date now and the reflash did nothing.

So, with the issue what I can do:
Charging via computer without a hitch - via car charger or plug is sketchy at best. Calls and text work fine

What I can't do:
Java apps and sync with motorola phone tools (via cable). Bluetooth is the only way.

Also, my water damage indicator is fine. I can only guess that a drop got into the usb section and messed it up. Fortunately, I have a spare V3xx that I'm taking the main board out of to throw into my hacked gold :-D

Have tried a hair dryer, Chris?

No wories :-) Gives me the chance to try to rip out the board in my other phone to replace... plus a clean stock flash and rehack ;-) I'm replacing the board that the usb sits on but let me tell you what a pain in the a$$ to get out. I'm replacing from a gunmetal to a gold so I need to take it off the casing... doesn't want to play nice.

Edit: Use the V3i disassembly guide - not much difference

Might as well let others learn from my pain ;-)

All back up and running again. Can't keep a good modder down :-)
