Motorola dump UIQ - no more UIQ phones to be released
UPDATED: As originally reported by Mobile Phone Development blog, Motorola have dumped UIQ (and Java-Linux) and will not be producing any more UIQ based phones. Motorola will focus on Android, Windows Mobile, and own P2K platform for low-cost handsets. Will no longer support Symbian UIQ or own Java-Linux platform. Consolidation of platforms should reduce expenses on OS development."
This news effectively means the end of any hope of Motorola producing any more UIQ phones. Even phones (such as Texel and Ruby) which were in advanced stages of development will now no longer see the light of day. It also means we're unlikely to see any official firmware updates from Motorola for any of their existing UIQ phones. A sad day indeed!
Update: We've now received confirmation that this move has resulted in a large number of job losses and site closures. The list as we understand it at the moment is as follows:
Sites closing
Birmingham (UK)
Turin (Italy)
Alborg (Denmark)
Rennes (France)
Job losses, but sites remaining
Basingstoke (UK): 180 jobs going

"The comments on Motorola's shift in mobile operating system (OS) strategy came during the earnings call from Sanjay Jha, Co-CEO of Motorola and CEO of the Mobile Devices unit. Jha announced that the company will no longer introduce new phones based on Symbian UIQ, nor on its homegrown MotoMAGX Linux/Java platform. Instead, it will base its smartphones and eventually its mid-market feature-phones on the Linux/Java-based Google Android platform, or on Windows Mobile. "

May be a good thing in the long run.
Focusing on a few platforms, could result in some better phones.

Those phones would be around still but it opens the door to powerful, feature packed handsets. With smartphones for the average consumer it would be a good business direction since there are alot of people who like the bells an whistles that they see on the expensive business user targeted handset.

WM handsets usually are big with QWERTY keyboards and I do not like them...
And Android maybe will not be available to Greece.For example,the G1 is only available in US.

I understand with what Motorola decision to to shut down MotoMagX and Symbian UIQ. Sony Ericsson also will shut down Symbian UIQ. From year 2009; Motorola will focus to OS P2K, Android and Windows Mobile. In the middle of Q2,2009 will release Motorola with OS Windows Mobile 6.5.
Windows Mobile 6.5 leaked + new Internet Explorer in emulator available
November 12, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
First screenshots of Windows Mobile 6.5 available at MotorolaZine.Biz
Note: the new Internet Explorer with desktop-class rendering engine and Flash is coming already in Windows Mobile 6.1.4 and is available in emulator form here, some quotes about it:
Some of the cool features available with Internet Explorer Mobile 6 are:
* Improved fidelity (support for full fidelity desktop rendering)
* Layout fixes to accommodate a mobile screen (text wrap)
* Enhanced Script and AJAX support (Jscript v5.7 from Internet Explorer 8)
* Improved multimedia experience (Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 for Adobe Flash content)
* Deeper integration with search
* Enhanced cursor navigation model
* Touch and gesture support – pan support
* Multiple zoom levels
* Easy switching between mobile / desktop versions of sites by specifying UA strings.
Conclusion: Windows Mobile 6.5 is much more than just new Internet Explorer and our prediction regarding future versions is:
* Windows Mobile 6.1.4 - new Internet Explorer
* Windows Mobile 6.5 - new UI for finger-based navigation and new looks, Skymarket (Windows Mobile application store)
* Windows Mobile 7 - multitouch, Zune software integrated.

They should dump P2K and Keep Linux/MotoMAGX, i guess they will dump motomagx and keep linux of E2/E6?. Android looks promising, Nokia has symbian on almost every phone except the very low ones (with FM and color display). this helps them to gain market market share becoz of the numerous apps and flexible firmware,sdk blah blah.
It is sad that motorola didnt focus on linux, they switch to motomagx and now dumping it! what a waste! also the released a SDK (after a long time) that does not support current phones :X
Also when i went to motodev.com it had Platform: Mobile Linux (and not Motomagx in the Z6)
