Lcd tv as laptop monitor?

Hello all. I have a 42" lcd tv that I would like to use as a secondary monitor. My laptop is a Gateway NX500S(old turd), the problem i have is that the only thing that shows on the tv is my wallpaper, no icons, mouse pointer or programs are shown. If gateway didnt charge for out of warrant customer support I would find the answer that way, but they do lol. Thanks for any info.

Probably because the resolution of the laptop video card will NOT match
any resolution on the LCD.

What are your current display settings, especially for 2nd monitor?
